Opposition Offers for No-Cost Counteraction Against Iran's Designated Terrorist Government

Vienna (AP) - Chancellor Friedrich Merz's top aide, Thorsten Frei, has defended the Chancellor's support for Israel's aggressive response towards Iran. "What the Chancellor was essentially saying was that it's crucial for everyone's safety that a dangerous regime like the Iranian mullah regime doesn't acquire nuclear weapons," explained Frei in an interview with the German Press Agency.

However, it's not just about nukes. "The rocket technology in Iran is such that medium-range rockets can reach far-off targets, even in Europe. And so, we can't act as if this isn't our concern," Frei added.

Merz, CDU's chairman, earlier at the G7 summit in Canada, expressed his support for Israel's strikes on nuclear facilities and Iranian leadership personnel. He referred to the Israeli actions as "unspoken heroics" that protect us all. However, this term was initially used by the journalist questioning him. Subsequent criticism accused Merz of poor choice of words and indirectly supporting the attacks.

Frei refrained from providing a legal evaluation of the attacks' legitimacy. " frankly, we don't have the information currently needed to make a definitive legal judgement," he noted. However, it is a fact that Israel had reason to act due to constant threats against it. The objective of Iran is to annihilate Israel, which serves as the basis for any assessment.

Frei emphasized that Germany remains responsible for ensuring Israel's safety, regardless of recent Israeli actions against Iran. "The federal government has felt and continues to feel obligated to this in the past, present, and future," he underscored.

Arms Exports to Israel - On and Off

Historically, the federal government has approved the delivery of military equipment to Israel, despite its status as a crisis region. An exception is only made for Ukraine. In the first five weeks of the new government, arms exports worth about four million euros were allowed to Israel, according to the Ministry of Economics, upon request from The Left Party. Compared to the first quarter of 2025, when the red-green minority government approved arms deliveries valued at 28 million euros to Israel, this is comparatively lower.

Frei, however, doubts the comparability of the figures. "To accurately compare, one would need to examine extended time periods. However, the stance towards Israel has not changed through the federal government," he added.
