Opposition groups Jatiyo Party and 14-party alliance to meet the same demise as fascist parties, according to Jamaat's Mujibur
Jamaat-e-Islami, a prominent political organisation in Bangladesh, has recently rallied to demand significant changes in the country's electoral process and accountability for past atrocities. The rally, held in front of the Barishal City Corporation premises, was led by Jamaat's Nayeb-e-Ameer, Mujibur Rahman.
Mujibur Rahman emphasised the importance of implementing the July Charter and holding elections under a Proportional Representation (PR) system. He argued that this would ensure a level playing field for all, making the election free, fair, and acceptable. The PR system, he stated, would also guarantee the value of every vote, giving power to the people.
One of Jamaat's key demands is the introduction of the PR system in both houses of parliament in the upcoming election. They believe this system would lead to a more transparent and people-oriented election.
Another demand is holding the next national election in February based on the July National Charter. Mujibur Rahman reiterated that people were deprived of their rights in previous elections and that the next election must be free and fair.
Jamaat terms the Jatiyo Party and the 14-party alliance as collaborators of autocracy. Mujibur Rahman stated that these parties will face the same fate as the fallen 'fascist regime.' Jamaat also demands a ban on the activities of the Jatiyo Party and the 14-party alliance.
The organisation of the presidential elections in Bangladesh is the responsibility of the Election Commission of Bangladesh. However, Mujibur Rahman has called for the introduction of a proportional representation system and for holding the national election in February according to the July Charter. No official authority other than the Election Commission is responsible for organising the elections.
After the rally, a procession paraded key streets of the city before returning to the original venue. The event marked a significant push for electoral reforms and accountability in Bangladesh, with the people's desire for a fair and transparent election at its heart.
