Flaring Controversy: Turkish Government Shuts Down Opposition Leader's Social Media Account

Opposition in Turkey Favoring Brightness as Counterpoint to Erdoğan's Rule - Opposition groups in Turkey turn to the symbol of light in their fight against President Erdogan's rule

In the heart of Istanbul, city's mayor and opposition heavyweight, Ekrem Imamoglu, faces a digital silence after his social media account was blocked on X, a widely used online service. The account @ekrem_imamoglu was silenced in Turkey due to a legal request, revealed on a chilly Thursday morning. A staggering sea of protesters, numbering tens of thousands, flooded the streets of Istanbul the previous day, rallying behind Imamoglu's main rival against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The "Presidential Communications Center for the Fight Against Disinformation," a Turkish presidency offshoot, declared the shutdown of Imamoglu's X account based on a post from April that could be interpreted as a "public call for a crime." The controversial post saw Imamoglu lashing out against the arrest of opposition figures and urging the public to "refuse to stay silent and unleash their voice."

The chairman of the Turkish Association for Freedom of Expression, Yaman Akdeniz, referred to the account block as a "discretionary order." Since Imamoglu's detention, an estimated hundreds of X accounts have felt the burden of blocks, as per Akdeniz's conversation with the news agency AFP. The online service has, in essence, transformed into an "extended arm of the Turkish law enforcement agencies."

Turkish Government Cracks Down on Critics' Social Media Accounts

Lawyer Gönenc Gürkaynak voiced his opposition to the court order, declaring that he had "filed an objection to the court order on behalf of X and in my capacity as an independent lawyer for X" in Turkey. As a mark of respect, users of the online service swapped their profile picture with a photo of Imamoglu.

Imamoglu's arrest occurred in March, soon followed by a court order mandating his confinement on corruption charges. Imamoglu, considered a formidable political adversary of President Erdogan, maintains his innocence in the face of these allegations. The arrest of the beloved opposition figure triggered the largest protest wave in Turkey since the infamous Gezi protests in 2013. Since March, approximately 2,000 people have been arrested during these protests, including numerous journalists.

Before his X account was silenced, Imamoglu called for participation in a demonstration organized by his leftist nationalist opposition party CHP. In response, tens of thousands of people heeded the call on Wednesday evening. The demonstration took place in front of Istanbul University, an institution that suspended Imamoglu's degree shortly before his arrest, barring his path to presidential candidacy. "Our battle is for democracy and freedom," CHP leader Özgür Özel yelled at the rally. A petition demanding Imamoglu's release and immediate new elections has been signed by 14.8 million Turks, according to Özel.
