Opposition Forces in Israel Call for Ceasefire Amidst Hostage Crisis in Gaza Conflict - Opposition groups in Israel and families of hostages urge for a ceasefire in Gaza conflict
In an unexpected turn of events, US President Donald Trump declared a potential ceasefire between Israel and Iran following a war that lasted 12 days.
"It's about time the Israeli government initiates negotiations to ensure the safe return of all hostages and a definitive end to this conflict," a statement from the Forum of Hostage Relatives read. This organization serves as the primary liaison for the 251 Israeli citizens, abducted by Hamas fighters in the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023. Currently, about 49 hostages still remain in the Gaza Strip, including 27 whom the Israeli military believes have already lost their lives.
While the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah expressed its support for the ceasefire extension between Iran and Israel, it reiterated the necessity for a comprehensive ceasefire, including the Gaza Strip itself.
In response, Israeli President Isaac Herzog urged for the ceasefire to pave the way for the immediate return of the hostages. Speaking at a press conference in Beersheba, he emphasized the importance of the ceasefire following an early morning rocket attack, which claimed four lives.
The ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip started when Hamas and its allies launched a brutal assault on Israel on October 7, 2023. Palestinian casualties are estimated to be around 1200 lives according to Israeli figures. In response, Israel has been conducting extensive military operations in the Gaza Strip, leading to an approximate death toll of 56,000 people in Gaza, according to numbers provided by the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health.
Since June 13, Israel has targeted Iranian nuclear facilities and military infrastructure in a series of attacks. Iran, in turn, responded with a barrage of rockets and drones on Israel. The USA intervened in the conflict, striking Iranian nuclear facilities in the early hours of Sunday.
Despite the ongoing talks for a ceasefire linked to hostage releases, tensions between Israel and Iran remain high. Previous ceasefires in 2023 and 2025 enabled the release of 148 alive hostages, but these agreements have been precarious and politically complex, notably collapsing in March 2025 due to disagreements within Israel over the full Israeli Defense Forces withdrawal from Gaza. The Israeli government continues to view Hamas as an Iranian-backed militant group, and their campaign against both Hamas and Iran shows no signs of abating. [Sources: 1, 2, 3, 4]
