In a heated plenary session, the Assembly of Madrid experienced a significant stir due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, found herself at the centre of controversy, being accused of being 'on the side of the genocidal' and compared to the spokesperson of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Ayuso asserted that the images from last Sunday do not represent Madrid, and she emphasized that the cyclists who were protested against were not representing Israel, but were Canadians, British, and directed by a Spaniard. She also challenged those who don't know what they're talking about to include those who want to cancel Atlético, a football team, from playing La Liga.

Manuela Bergerot, the political party Más Madrid's spokesperson, questioned Ayuso's role, whether she is there as the lawyer of her boyfriend or as the spokesperson of Netanyahu. Bergerot also defended the peaceful protest against the conflict resolution in Gaza and criticized Ayuso's comparison of protests in Madrid to Sarajevo at war, highlighting the 'overwhelming solidarity' of Madrileños.

Bergerot called the protesters 'scum' and accused Ayuso of being arrogant. In response, Ayuso replied that Bergerot should forget who she represents and criticized the left for having nothing to propose. Bergerot warned that every flag prohibited will be multiplied by a hundred to send a message to the world.

Mar Espinar, the socialist spokesperson, brought out the Palestinian flag and explained its symbolism to Ayuso. Espinar also criticized Ayuso's statement that she promotes integration in Madrid, of Gazan children, but also of Jews who are starting to be persecuted, as it was perceived as insensitive and divisive.

Ayuso stated that she's not to blame for the pandemic, heatwaves, or the conflict in the Middle East. She also announced that the Community of Madrid will award its Gold Medal to the Vuelta ciclista on May 2nd. The management team of the cyclists was of an Israeli businessman, which sparked further debate about Ayuso's stance on the conflict.

Ayuso asked the left to stop provoking in classrooms and inciting hatred in educational centers. She also stated that people can go freely to protest but not to harass athletes. Bergerot criticized Ayuso's people for responding with insults and falsehoods.

The controversy over Palestinian flags in schools was not addressed directly during the plenary session, leaving many questions unanswered. As the conflict in Gaza continues, the tensions in Madrid's Assembly are likely to persist.
