Opponents of the Argentine Embassy departed after negotiations, as stated by Diosdado Cabello.
Venezuela's Interior Minister Spills Beans on Embassy Operation
In a tell-all on state television channel VTV, the Interior Minister of Venezuela, Diosdado Cabello, revealed that the operation that allowed four opposition figures to leave the Argentine Embassy in Caracas was the result of a "negotiation".
The Ambassador's Fortress - A Hideout for Opposition Figures
These opposition members, including the campaign manager and the communications director of opposition leader María Corina Machado, had been sheltering inside the embassy since March 2024, evading arrest by Venezuelan authorities loyal to President Nicolás Maduro. The Argentine government, led by President Javier Milei, had allowed them into the ambassador’s residence after warrants for their arrest were issued, accusing them of promoting acts of violence to destabilize the country.
Surveillance and Cut-off Services
Since late November 2024, the opposition members had reported constant surveillance by intelligence and police forces outside the embassy and accused the government of cutting electricity and water services to the compound. However, the government denied these allegations.
The Epic Extraction Operation
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the departure of the opposition figures as a "rescue operation," welcoming it as a successful freeing of hostages held by the Maduro regime at the Argentine Embassy. Rubio confirmed their arrival safely on U.S. soil but did not detail how the group was moved out of Venezuela. María Corina Machado also praised the operation as “impeccable and epic” for the freedom of her colleagues.
The Truth Behind the Negotiation
Cabello defended that the detainees were there of their own free will and implied that it was all part of a victimization campaign. He stated that opposition leader María Corina Machado would have participated in the negotiation, and that the departure of the mother of the leader of the Vente Venezuela party was included in the same.
Contradicting information from U.S. authorities, Cabello maintained that there were only four people in the Argentine Embassy and, therefore, only four people had left Venezuela. In fact, one of the hostages, Claudia Macero, left the building "on her own" on August 20th.
Fernando Martínez Mottola and the Show
Cabello also referred to the departure from the Embassy in December 2024 of Fernando Martínez Mottola, who was then placed under house arrest and died in February 2025. "And where did Martínez Mottola go? To his house because what they had was a show," he added.
