Turkey: Imamoglu, Rival of Erdogan, Detained - Interior Ministry Ousts Him
- Opponent of Erdogan and CHP politician, Ekrem İmamoğlu, detained for custody.
Dive into the latest buzz from Turkey! Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul and a fierce adversary of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, finds himself in police custody, per reports from Anadolu, the state news agency. The Istanbul prosecutor's office had previously demanded his incarceration.
The Turkish interior ministry has taken steps to remove Imamoglu from his position as mayor of Istanbul, announcing on Sunday, "Imamoglu's duties have been suspended."
On Wednesday, Imamoglu, along with dozens of others, was apprehended, near the time he was due to put forth his candidacy for the CHP party's presidential nomination. Imamoglu faces charges of terrorism and corruption in two separate cases.
These corruption allegations revolve around allegations of membership in a criminal organization, extortion, bribery, fraud, and bid-rigging. The terror charges against Imamoglu, as per Anadolu, stem from claims of cooperation between the CHP and the pro-Kurdish DEM party in local elections. On Wednesday, Anadolu reported that the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) attempted to expand its influence via this cooperation, according to the chief public prosecutor's office.
Turkey: Nationwide Protests Ignite in Spite of Prohibition on Demonstrations
Initially, the arrest order was issued in correlation with the corruption probe. A grand total of 106 people are under investigation in both cases, with detention orders also issued against Imamoglu's advisors and numerous others. Imamoglu denies all accusations.
Imamoglu rebuked the charges by stating, "I call upon my people. With your support, we will first foil this coup, and then we will expel those who have allowed this to happen to us."
Facing criticism for attempting to eliminate a political foe, opposition figures and observers accuse the government of employing underhanded tactics against Imamoglu. The fervent protests that have erupted across the country have been ongoing for several days, defying a ban on demonstrations. The CHP reported over 300,000 participants in Istanbul alone on Friday; however, the validity of this figure remains unverified.
Private life, education, and university
Ekrem Imamoglu was born in 1970 in Istanbul. Following completion of his military service, he studied economics at Yıldız Technical University, graduating in 1995. It's worth noting that his diploma was rescinded by his alma mater shortly before his detention.
Political rise
Imamoglu's victory in Istanbul's 2019 elections can be viewed as a resounding defeat for Erdogan's AKP party, which governed the city before then. Imamoglu triumphed in Istanbul again in 2024. Given its high population and crucial political and economic significance, Istanbul often serves as a symbol of overall political influence in the country. Erdogan's political journey also originated in Istanbul, where he was elected mayor in 1994.
Ozgur Ozel, leader of the CHP, deemed the arrest of his party comrade as a "civilian coup." Erdogan's party refutes this allegation, referring to it as "the zenith of political irrationality."
Despite the charges, the CHP intends to adhere to their planned nomination of Imamoglu as their presidential candidate, with 1.7 million CHP members nationwide called to cast their vote. Although Imamoglu is viewed as a strong competitor to Erdogan, the investigations may thwart his official candidacy. The next regular presidential election is set for 2028.
Word of Caution: This article was updated post the suspension of Imamoglu.
