Opinion: Why I’m fine as a Russian in America

Living as a Russian in the heart of America for over three decades, I've yet to encounter any hint of Russophobia. The changing sentiments towards Russia over the years have been reflected in various U.S. policies, but that has rarely translated into hostility towards me or fellow Russians residing in the country.

Despite the present conflict with Ukraine, America has shown a remarkable display of solidarity with Ukraine, adorning cities and townships across the nation with signs of support and attending anti-war demonstrations. Never have I felt the Russian-American bond negatively affected by such actions. The demonstrations signal disapproval towards the Russian government for its actions, not the general population.

Historically, the relationship between the United States and Russia has been marked by diverse, intricate dynamics. During the Cold War era, tension and suspicion towards Russians prevailed due to anti-communist sentiments. However, post-Bush's presidency, there was a brief period of cooperation between the U.S. and Russia. Nevertheless, the annexation of Crimea and the ongoing Ukraine conflict have led to a growing critical stance towards Russia and its citizens in the U.S. Public opinion surveys corroborate this trend, with many Americans expressing concerns regarding Russia's interference in U.S. elections.

It is important to note that while the broader sentiment within the U.S. has become more critical, there have also been initiatives to foster understanding between Americas and Russians. Community organizations and groups are actively engaged in promoting cultural exchanges and dialogue, recognizing the inherent diversity present within both nations.

Putting it all into perspective, even in the midst of geopolitical tensions, the vast majority of Americans have allowed me to embrace my Russian roots without any prejudice. Their concern towards the Russian government does not taint their views of Russian people, and I am grateful for that.
