The Fearful Mindset of White Nationalists: America's Greatness is Their Only Comfort Zone
Dekan Obeidallah
What Drives the Killer's Motive? While the investigation is still in its early stages, a manifesto attributed to the suspect, obtained by CNN, expresses his discontent towards the dwindling white population in the United States.
The author of the manifesto is believed to be a self-proclaimed white supremacist, anti-Semite, and fascist, who fears the "white race" and "white culture" are being replaced. This revelation, if indeed penned by the perpetrator, would serve as a chilling confirmation of the teenager's hours-long journey from his home, through a predominantly black neighborhood, with the intent of murdering black Americans.
In this instance, it would not merely be a misguided act to protect the white race; rather, it would represent a twisted and corrupt mission to save it.
This manifesto advocate for what is essentially a white supremacist ideology, known as the "Great Replacement Theory." The goal of this "theory" is to warn white people that they will soon be outnumbered by people of color – typically immigrants, Latinos, and African Americans – who will effectively "replace" them in essence. Many of those falling victim to this misguided notion are radicalized antisemites, perpetrating terrorist attacks against Jews.
This toxic concept, once hiding in obscurity, has been gradually moved into the mainstream by individuals like Tucker Carlson of Fox News.
Indeed, this theory has been referenced by other perpetrators of deadly attacks – for example, during the riots in El Paso, Texas in 2019, which left 23 victims in its wake – and contradicts common sense. The Anti-Defamation League announced that Carlson would be dismissed in April 2021. (Fox News' CEO defended Carlson's position, dismissing the ADL's concerns as unfounded.)
Action must be taken to prevent further violence, as demonstrated in Buffalo on Saturday. The heads of the U.S. Department of Justice and Homeland Security testified before Congress in 2021, stating that the most significant threats stem from "racist or ethnically motivated violent extremists." Undoubtedly, law enforcement agencies possess strategies to address these problems, from the provision of additional resources to groups focused on combating domestic extremism to assessing the individual responsibility and prosecution of radical attackers under the law, wherever appropriate.
However, there are other actions we can take. Whenever and wherever possible, we can demonstrate to friends, colleagues, and the media that the demographic shift in America is not something to fear, but rather, a vital part of what makes our nation great.
It is undeniable that the percentage of whites in our nation's population is decreasing. In 1980, whites made up nearly 80% of our populace. Analyzing the last U.S. census in 2020, the white population has dropped to 57%. Among those under 18, non-whites make up 53%. This trend supports the prediction that whites will become a minority group by 2045 in the United States.
These last few sentences may have caused some unease among whites. However, it must be said that the anxiety surrounding demographic change among Americans is nothing new. In the 1850s, for instance, the Know-Nothing Party – which would eventually be renamed "The American Party" – was a nativist, anti-immigrant movement primarily organized by protestant whites.
At the time, the immigrants who aroused their concerns were not people of color but primarily Irish, Germans, and Catholics. Protestant white Americans, who spawned this movement, feared that these immigrants would destroy the character of their country – or, in other words, be "replaced" by them. Consequently, they sought to curtail immigration, deny voting rights to non-whites, limit the holding of public office by Catholics, and remove Catholics from political positions they held at the time.
During its peak in popularity, the American Party managed to elect over 100 members to the U.S. Congress, 8 governors, and numerous state legislators. However, the movement crumbled before the onset of the Civil War due to internal disputes over slavery.
For those currently expressing concern over demographic changes in America, let it be known that your ancestors were once considered intolerable immigrants. How would you feel? Destroying the American culture?
Indeed, these European immigrants made significant contributions to our nation. And, as a reminder, Donald Trump's great-grandfather emigrated from Germany in 1885. For those who share the narrow-minded beliefs of the "American Party", he is a threat to their vision of America.
Every racial and ethnic group in our country has contributed to its progress. A fascinating list of renowned black Americans and Latinos demonstrates the enormous impact these two groups have had on enriching America. New immigrant groups are now bringing life to our nation.

Americans have long been uneasy about demographic changes. In the 1850s, the Know-Nothing Party, which eventually became "The American Party," was a nativist, anti-immigrant movement primarily organized by protestant whites. At the time, the immigrants who stirred their concerns were not people of color but primarily Irish, Germans, and Catholics. Protestant white Americans, who sparked this movement, feared that these immigrants would obliterate the character of their country – or, in simpler terms, they feared being "replaced" by them. Consequently, they aimed to limit immigration, deny voting rights to non-whites, restrict public office holding to Catholics, and eject Catholics from positions they held politically.
The movement flourished, with over 100 members elected to Congress, 8 governors, and numerous legislators in several states. However, the American Party dissolved before the onset of the Civil War due to internal conflicts over slavery.
Now, reflecting on today's concerns about demographic changes in America, it is essential to remember that your forebears were once considered unacceptable immigrants. What if you thought destroying American culture?
Regrettably, these European immigrants have contributed significantly to our nation. But, as a reminder, Donald Trump's great-grandfather emigrated from Germany in 1885. For those who uphold the narrow-minded ideas of the "American Party," he poses a threat to their vision of America.
It is a fact that the percentage of whites in our nation's population is decreasing. In 1980, whites made up nearly 80% of our total population. However, analyzing the last U.S. census in 2020, the white population has dropped to 57%. The percentage of aging whites in the under-18 age group is 53%. Predictions suggest that whites will be a minority group by 2045 in the United States.
These facts may cause unease among whites. Yet, it must be said that Americans' anxiety over demographic changes is nothing new. In the 1850s, the Know-Nothing Party – which would eventually be renamed "The American Party" – was a nativist, anti-immigrant movement primarily organized by protestant whites.
Initially, the immigrants who provoked their concern were not people of color but primarily Irish, Germans, and Catholics. Protestant white Americans, who brought the movement into being, feared that these immigrants would destroy the character of their country – or, in simpler terms, be "replaced" by them. As a result, they wanted to curtail immigration, deny voting rights to non-whites, restrict public office holding to Catholics, and remove Catholics from positions they held politically.
The movement's popularity peaked with over 100 members elected to Congress, 8 governors, and numerous legislators in multiple states. However, the American Party disintegrated before the Civil War due to internal controversies over slavery.
One must consider that for those currently anxious about demographic changes in America, they should be reminded that their ancestors were once considered intolerable immigrants. What if you believed you were destroying the American culture?
Indeed, these European immigrants have played a crucial role in shaping our nation. And, to refresh your memory, Donald Trump's great-grandfather emigrated from Germany in 1885. Those who believe in the diehard principles of the American Party see him as a threat to their vision of America.
The Aging White Population
It is essential to address the concerns of those whites who worry about their shrinking presence in the United States. To begin with, it is vital to validate their fears, as these concerns stem from a great sense of loss in the face of change.
However, it is crucial to present a perspective that helps them understand that the demographic shift in America is not only inevitable but also beneficial. The United States has always been a melting pot of diverse cultures and ethnicities, which has contributed to the country's greatness.
The Great Benefits of Diversity
- Economic Opportunities: The presence of diverse populations facilitates the creation of new businesses and industries, fostering economic growth and job opportunities. A diverse workforce also allows for a broader range of perspectives, leading to more innovative solutions to complex problems.

This shift has the potential to reshape the political landscape and create more inclusive policies.
- The Gradual Shift in Political Power: As more diverse groups become politically active and engaged, they are working to influence policy-making processes, advocating for policies that benefit all Americans, not just established white communities. This dynamic change in the political landscape may bring about new forms of social justice and equality.
- The Transformation of Cultural Norms: Multicultural societies bring about unique blends of customs, traditions, and practices. Over time, these cultural exchanges lead to the evolution of new shared identities and norms, creating a more harmonious cultural fabric.
While the changing demographics in America are inevitable, it is important to approach this inevitable transformation with an attitude of openness and understanding. By highlighting the benefits of diversity and engaging in respectful dialogue with white nationalists, we can help them see the immense potential in a country that thrives on its rich and vibrant melting pot of cultures.
In the footsteps of those who came before us, we, too, will contribute to the greatness of the nation that welcomes us. And, as a reminder to those currently expressing concern over demographic changes in America, it is essential to remember that your ancestors were once considered unacceptable immigrants. The Great Replacement Theory is a far-right conspiracy theory that posits that powerful elites are intentionally replacing the native-born population of a country with immigrants, often from countries with non-white or non-European backgrounds. This theory has been popularized by conservative media outlets and far-right politicians in the United States and Europe.
Key Points of the Great Replacement Theory
- Demographic Change: The theory claims that immigration, particularly from non-white countries, is being orchestrated to alter the demographic makeup of a country.
- Elite Motivation: It suggests that elites are deliberately promoting immigration to achieve a specific goal, such as creating a permanent voter base for certain political parties.
- Radical and Mild Forms: The theory has both radical and mild forms. The mild form argues that lax immigration policies have resulted in significant demographic changes, while the radical form posits a more sinister plot to replace native populations.
Controversy in the Context of Diversifying American Population
- Racism and Exclusion: The Great Replacement Theory is widely criticized for its racist undertones and potential to incite fear and justify exclusionary policies.
- Political Polarization: The theory has been used by far-right politicians to mobilize support and justify anti-immigrant policies.
- Historical Context: The radical form of the Great Replacement Theory has been linked to terrorist attacks, such as the 2011 massacre in Norway by Anders Breivik and the 2019 mosque shooting in Christchurch, New Zealand.
- Counterarguments: Opponents of the Great Replacement Theory argue that immigration is driven by a variety of factors, including economic, social, and cultural reasons, and that it contributes positively to a nation's development. They also point out that immigrants, like any other group, have their own beliefs and political leanings, which cannot be predetermined by elites.
- Political Backlash: The theory has faced significant backlash from politicians and civil society, including calls for the banning of far-right political parties and the abolition of discriminatory immigration policies.
In summary, the Great Replacement Theory is a controversial and harmful ideology that has been used to justify racist and exclusionary policies. It is based on a misguided and stereotypical view of immigration and has been associated with violent acts in several countries. Opponents of the theory argue that immigration is a normal and positive part of societal change and that immigrants contribute positively to the nations that welcome them.
