Presidential Debate Speeches that Left an Impression

If you're fortunate enough to catch one, you'll be treated to some of the most powerful speeches in presidential debate history. Let's dive right in and break down the performances of the four candidates:

Chris Christie: A++

Redesigning history, Chris Christie graced us with what I call "The Chris Christie Revenge Speech."

For a speech in a debate to truly stand out, it needs to touch on a crucial topic, use solid arguments backed by evidence, and passionately deliver its message. The best speeches, however, must also present an undiscovered perspective that resonates with the debate audience. Christie's speech fulfilled every criterion:

  1. Topic significance: The former New Jersey governor was on point when discussing former President Donald Trump's comments this week, hinting at Trump's potential dictatorial leanings during a hypothetical second term.

Christie remarks, "It's as predictable as it is infuriating – a bitter, bitter man seeking revenge against anyone who dares disagree with him, anyone who dares hold him accountable for his actions."

  1. Solid argumentation: Christie's argument defending Trump's popularity was fiendishly clever, exploiting a weakness – Trump's high poll ratings – and turning it into an attack against his opponents. Christie argued, "You ask yourself why the poll numbers are so high? It's because of views like those on this stage. [Laughter] People like these types on the stage accept his behavior."
  2. Captivating delivery: If you can find this two-minute speech, be sure to watch it in its entirety. Observe Chris Christie's body language and pacing, and listen to his rhythm as he delivers his points. There's a chilling quote wearing you'll want to jot down: Trump's mad declaration of revenge – "I am your revenge."

Christie's performance may be the most impactful in the history of presidential debates, though his opponent, Nikki Haley, had her shine, too.

Nikki Haley: A+

Former UN ambassador and South Carolina governor Nikki Haley faced fierce criticism from deckmates DeSantis and Ramaswamy at the beginning of the debate. Fortunately for Haley, their attacks fell flat against her unbreakable spirit.

Haleys' opposition decried allegations of self-serving business relationships, lack of principles when dealing with China, and poor relations with American heavyweights. While some points held validity, many critics were enraged to find that Haley's opponents had forgotten that their own sleights of hand had gone unnoticed in the past.

Only a resourceful debater like Haley could dismantle her opponents' attacks with grace and wit. Her defense of her corporate connections, her unwavering principles, and her support for corporate innovation earned her rousing applause. She brilliantly countered attacks aimed at her alleged hypocrisy, a refreshing change from the personal attacks that often dominate debates.

Nikki Haley's unflappable demeanor throughout this adversity left critics questioning why she hadn't drawn more support from sympathetic audiences.

Ron DeSantis: B-

The Governor of Florida's debate performance has shown little improvement – especially when it comes to his nonverbal communication. His glum expression seemed out of place amidst stimulating debate.

However, DeSantis's strength lies in his foreign policy stance, primarily his cutting ties with China, but he faltered when pressed to explain Florida's approach to the drug smuggling crisis.

DeSantis favors sharing personal anecdotes, and while they work well in most settings, they don't translate as effectively in debates. When prompted to answer questions, he'd often start with a story, wasting valuable time that could have been used for factual responses.

DeSantis remains a fairly average debater – he's neither charming nor striking, just plain old Ron DeSantis.

Vivek Ramaswamy: F

There's no need to rehash the nonsense spewed by troll Vivek Ramaswamy. For those curious, his stage presence during this debate can only be described as someone trying to outdo his own previous performance, which was already criticized by many as foolhardy.

Harassed by critics during the debate, it must have been frustrating for Ramaswamy to be ignored by Haley. When asked challenging questions by moderator Elizabeth Vargas, Ramaswamy's consciousness-raising tactics failed to sway the audience.

Ramaswamy's goal was to highlight Haley's misplaced knowledge of Ukraine, prompting her to make errors in recognizing Ukrainian provinces. The strategy – while clever – fell flat, as no one seemed to care about the topic anyway. Inevitably, Haley's apathy was a massive slap in the face to Ramaswamy's ego.

In short: keep up with the shenanigans of clown Ramaswamy, but be sure to scratch your head at his woeful debate performance.
