Unconventional Journey to Fatherhood

My early experiences started like many others, filled with privilege and complacency. We believed ourselves invincible. We thought nothing would touch us. We were wrong.

I told her right away, "Your body, your choice." I meant it genuinely; I truly believed it wasn't my decision. She fought. Raised as a "good" Christian, she didn't want to be a mother at 18. She had dreams and plans. They came first.

We went to Planned Parenthood. Only my best friend knew. I worked part-time at a fast food restaurant, covering my bills and expenses. I waited in the lobby – seats filled with diverse faces from every corner of the city. As we waited, I read People Magazine. She cried, as she walked in. An hour felt like ten. She was calm when she came out.

We spoke little in the following days and weeks. I just tried to comfort her when she needed it, fed her when she was hungry. We were drunk. She smoked – my roommate grew lots of weed in the basement. None of it helped.
