Controlling Mass Shootings in America: Addressing the Real Issue

According to Gun Violence Archive, there were around 213 mass shootings in the U.S. this year. Surprisingly, Education Week reported that 2021 witnessed 27 school shootings that resulted in fatalities.

Let's face it, it's not normal.

Despite common beliefs, the likelihood of an American being killed by an armed assailant is markedly higher than by a terrorist. For instance, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 19,384 homicides by firearms in the U.S. in 2020. While New America reported 4 terror-related deaths that same year, Statistics for the U.K. indicate there were approximately 30 shootings in England and Wales, resulting in fewer casualties than the U.S. even with a fraction of the population.

Americans perceive themselves as citizens of a special nation. Yes, the U.S. is exceptional, but not in the number and ease of gun possession. In fact, it sits a distant second to Jemen, a war-torn country with a significantly lower rate of gun ownership.

Contrary to gun lobby claims, the easy access to firearms does not make Americans safer. The likelihood of being killed by an attacker with a firearm is approximately 90 times higher in the U.S. than in England and Wales – both countries with a significantly smaller population and fewer shootings, according to the Office for Statistics (ONS).

So, why bring up gun control? It's not about the firearm, but the shooter.

Americans do not suffer from unique psychological instability, but easy access to weapons makes it a viable option for those already prone to violence. It is crucial to note that we do not discuss legal, semi-automatic hunting rifles, whose purpose is not mass destruction.

Our focus should be on sturmgewehre – weapons with the sole intent of harming multiple individuals efficiently and rapidly. They have no place on American streets.

The Texas suspect reportedly procured two AR-style sturmgewehre a few days before the attack, as per CNN. According to Sgt. Eric Estrada of the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Texas shooters were armed with body armor. Why is it acceptable for U.S. citizens to purchase body armor but not those who have a legitimate need for it, such as security personnel?

There are rational measures that can be implemented to reduce mass shootings in the U.S. Effective threat assessment, addressing school safety, mental health support, and stricter firearm regulations can help to curb these tragedies.

The ease of obtaining firearms is the real problem. Instead of debating the gun lobby, it's time to prioritize the safety of American citizens, not their access to weapons.

Background Checks

Implementing in-depth background checks and establishing "Red Flag Laws" are important steps towards preventing guns from falling into the wrong hands. Red Flag laws give law enforcement the power to seizure firearms from individuals who pose a danger to themselves or others.

School Safety Measures

Instituting school-based threat assessment teams composed of skilled experts who can evaluate and mitigate potential threats is a viable prevention method. Early intervention can also help mitigate violent behavior. Developing anonymous reporting systems empowers students to report concerning behavior.

Mental Health Support

Increasing funding for mental health programs and services, as well as early intervention, can help identify and support individuals who may be at risk of violent behavior.

Firearm Regulations

Raising the minimum age to purchase assault weapons and large-capacity magazines can limit their availability to potential shooters. Banning assault weapons and large-capacity magazines can significantly reduce the lethality of mass shootings.

Community Engagement

Promoting a culture of whistleblowing, where students can feel safe reporting potential threats, is essential. Encouraging community involvement in school safety efforts can help identify and address concerns more effectively.

By implementing these measures, the United States can work towards creating safer environments for schools and communities, ultimately reducing the likelihood of mass shootings.
