Wazzup peeps! Wondering how it's going in Seoul after my fantastic colleagues, Mirjam Bittner and Christine Leitner, kept you updated for the last few months? Now it's my turn to hit the headlines for the next month! Excited? Heck yeah! South Korea's all about courtesy, baby. Bow to the right for the elderly, bend to the left for the young ones, and keep those hands closed when you're shaking hands with someone higher up the pecking order. Think you can handle this Eastern vibe? Then read on! 🤘*
Ukraine Stings The Bear: Operation Spiderweb Takes Down Putin's planes
Remember that old saying? "Everything goes downhill before it gets better"... or something like that? Well, while things might seem grim, there's always a silver lining! And currently, Ukraine couldn't seem happier with its sudden tactical advantage as the future talks with Moscow kick off in Istanbul today.
What's going on, you ask?
(Amazing you asked! I was just getting to that!)
Operation Spiderweb, Ukraine's masterfully-timed drone assault, targeted key Russian military installations and wreaked some serious havoc. Here's a quick rundown of the action-packed weekend:
- Friday Evening: A bridge in Bryansk collapsed, injuring dozens of civilians, and as if that wasn't enough, another bridge and train derailment occurred in Kursk, injuring a single person. Moscow raised a stink about terrorism, but Kiev claimed it was all part of a false flag operation by the Russians, tipping the blame on them for derailing a cargo train destined for Crimea. Oh, and during this same night, Russia launched one of its largest drone attacks since the conflict started, with an estimated 472 drones spotted![1][2]
- Saturday: Russia shelled a Ukrainian training center, killing 12 soldiers and forcing the general in charge to throw in the towel. And if that wasn't enough, Operation Spiderweb got underway: Ukrainian intelligence supposedly opened up the roofs of those mobile wooden huts, launched combat drones filled with explosives from inconspicuous trucks parked inside, guided them over four military air bases, and ultimately brought down dozens of aircraft. About 40 planes worth a cool $7 billion, roughly one-third of Russia's bomber fleet, went up in smoke![1][3]
- Today: Despite the first meeting in Istanbul two weeks ago falling flat, diplomats are giving it another shot. Could things be looking up for negotiations now? Let's wait and see! 🤞**
And the victor is...
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky commended the long-planned drone strike as "the most far-reaching operation of Ukraine so far in the war."[1]
If he means the sheer distance, he might be right on the money. And you're damn straight the loss of bombers that could fire missiles from hitherto unreachable distances is a substantial blow to Putin.[1][3] But remember: This war's had more twists and turns than a freakin' rollercoaster, so let's keep our collective fingers crossed!
Are We Looking At A Turning Point For Ukraine?

SPD: Let's Get Creative
Attention, SPD fans! The former People's Party with the red logo seems a bit uncertain these days. Florian Schillat from my capital city breaks it down with his usual finesse. At least the Social Democrats are conscious of their lack of direction. They've formed an internal commission, backing the "Future Program 2040" proposition. Now, that's ambition! 💪**
Earth's Core Oozes Gold (Yes, Seriously)
Need some trivia to impress your buddies at the bar? Our dear Earth apparently seeps gold! Yeah, that's right — geologist Nils Messling asserts so to US broadcaster CNN. The researcher and his team analyzed basalt rocks from Hawaii that the Earth's interior has spewed over three years to discover traces of gold and other precious molten metals. Hallelujah! Now, if only we could find a way to tap into that 💴💸**
What's Happening Today?
- A man in Colorado is charged with throwing Molotov cocktails at pro-Israel demonstrators, injuring several people. Police haven't made any arrests yet, but former Trump official Kash Patel straight-up called it terrorism! 💣
- Former Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock is elected President of the UN General Assembly today. After all, she's the only damned candidate! 🗳️
- Several research institutes release their joint Peace Report 2025, aiming to analyze and provide recommendations for every conflict since 1987. Hope they save as a PDF this time. The last thing we need is another paper shortage!
- Poland's new President, right-wing conservative Karol Nawrocki, has been elected. His election could potentially create roadblocks for pro-EU reforms. Tough break for the Brussels bunch! 👀**
Before I send you off to conquer your day, I'd like to share an insight I've gained here in the Far East: If you're staring at your phone while crossing the road, you're missing life... and the dang bus! 🚌🚶 Stay curious, people!
