Collaborating Across the Aisle: Reichinnek's Case for CDU-Left Union

Opening the Door for Collaboration with the Union for Reichinnek

In the political realm, the Union, specifically the CDU and CSU, has a lengthy history of incompatibility resolutions regarding cooperation with left and right-wing extremists. Yet, Heidi Reichinnek, leader of the Left faction in the Bundestag, has shown optimism towards broader cooperation with the Union.

Addressing the editorial network Germany (RND), Reichinnek expressed, "Even on the day of the Chancellor’s election, we sat in a room with the CDU and no one burst into flames. We may have little in common with the Union, and that's a good thing. But of course, we remain in conversation with all democrats to achieve something for the people."

The chairwoman further contemplated the possibility of tolerating a CDU state government in her home state of Saxony-Anhalt to thwart an AfD government after the 2026 state election. She emphasized, "I am personally ready for almost anything before my home is thrown to the AfD."

Reichinnek urged the Union to reconsider its incompatibility resolution with the Left, stating, "The CDU can and should say that it works with a democratic party like the Left, but not with the right-wing extremist AfD. It only needs a fundamental democratic compass to decide who to work with or not."

A unified strategy between the Left, Greens, and SPD to forge Red-Red-Green coalition options was another proposal by Reichinnek, emphasizing the need for progressive majorities in the coming years. "We must develop more support for our positions in society as a whole," she said. Currently, the Left has outpaced the Greens in polls, though Reichinnek declined to celebrate this development, calling for collaboration instead.

Criticizing the Social Democrats, Reichinnek lamented, "I see nothing in the black-red coalition agreement that the SPD once stood for." Nevertheless, she expressed hope that the SPD would reconsider its stance in the next four years.
