The 21st Festival of German Film is currently underway in Ludwigshafen, Rhineland-Palatinate, attracting a diverse array of film enthusiasts and industry professionals. This year, the festival runs until September 7, with over 75 productions being presented in Rhineland-Palatinate's second-largest city.

The opening film is "Petra goes swimming" by Rainer Kaufmann, setting the tone for a week of cinematic exploration. The festival takes place on the border with Baden-Württemberg, with screenings taking place in tent cinemas and an open-air cinema.

Last year, over 120,000 people attended the festival, making Ludwigshafen the second most visited German film festival after the Berlin Film Festival. Minister-President Alexander Schweitzer attended the opening of the festival and praised it as the most beautiful in Germany.

Director Edgar Reitz, known for his work on the critically acclaimed series "Heimat", is being honoured with an honorary award at this year's festival. Reitz is expected to be joined by a number of notable guests, including Julia Koschitz, Ulrike Folkerts, Milan Peschel, and Burghart Klaußner.

Uwe Ochsenknecht and Rainer Bock will also receive acting awards at the festival. The evening screening of the festival took place on an island in the Rhine, with the Park Island serving as a place of encounter during the festival.

A jury of experts will award the Film Art Prize, while the audience will vote for the Rheingold Prize. Festival director Michael Kötz welcomed actress Ulrike Kriener, actor Philipp Moog, and representatives from local politics and business to the event.

The festival serves as an ideas hub and important industry meeting point, providing a platform for both established and emerging filmmakers to showcase their work and connect with others in the industry. With a week of exciting screenings, awards, and events still to come, the 21st Festival of German Film in Ludwigshafen is sure to be a highlight of the film calendar.
