Left-leaning Party Open to Dialogue with Union in Saxony-Anhalt: Reichinnek's Ax to Grind

Opening dialogue for potential collaboration between Reichinnek and the Union

It's clear as day that the Left faction leader, Heidi Reichinnek, is game for some productive chats with the Union. In an interview with the German Editorial Network (RND), Reichinnek dropped a hint that she'd like the CDU and CSU to consider partnering with the Left to ward off the AfD from taking control in Saxony-Anhalt. She even tossed around the idea of a red-red-green coalition.

Reichinnek's not mincing her words: "On the chancellor's election day, we were in a room with the CDU, and no one sent smoke signals. We've got little in common, which is a good thing. But remember, we still talk to all democrats to make things better for the people."

Borderline Politics Cat's Cradle in the Bundestag The Left is playing a lone wolf in the parliament. Reichinnek mused about tolerating a CDU state government in her home turf of Saxony-Anhalt to steer clear of an AfD administration post-2026 state elections. Her words were blunt: "I'm ready for almost anything to keep my hometown from the clutches of the AfD."

Reichinnek called on the Union to scrap the incompatibility resolution concerning the Left. "Sure, the CDU can work with a democratic party like the Left, not with the right-wing extremist AfD. It just needs a steady compass rooted in democracy. The Left is geared towards making democracy fair, while the AfD aims to undermine it. It's easy to pick your battles, don't you think?"

Reichinnek didn't hold back: "In the end, the Union needs to take a stand on which side of history it wants to be on."

Red-Hot Politics Joint Forces: Voter Outreach Strategy

For the left-wing spectrum, Reichinnek is urging a coordinated strategy between the Left, Greens, and SPD to enable red-red-green coalition options. "Of course, we need to figure out a way to garner progressive majorities over the next four years. Not just us, but also the SPD and the Greens need to be onto something," said Reichinnek.

Currently, the Left has surpassed the Greens in the polls for the first time. Reichinnek doesn't take it as a victory for her party: "It doesn't really matter if the Greens and we snatch votes from each other. Instead, we should look at the demographics each side taps and seek common ground."

Reichinnek pulled no punches when it comes to the Social Democrats: "I can't find anything in the black-red coalition agreement that the SPD used to stand for. I fear that the SPD will be a shadow of its former self under the BlackRock Chancellor Merz. I hope the SPD comes to its senses in the next four years."
