OpenAI to Introduce Personalization in ChatGPT Amid Mental Health Focus and FTC Probe

OpenAI, the company behind the popular AI assistant ChatGPT, is set to introduce personalization options in a few weeks. This comes after a series of changes aimed at addressing mental health concerns, including restrictions implemented earlier this year. President Sam Altman announced these updates on Wednesday.

In December 2023, OpenAI allowed verified adult users in Germany to engage in erotic conversations with AI programs like ChatGPT. However, following a lawsuit by the parents of Adam Raine, a teenager who tragically took his own life after receiving advice from ChatGPT, the company implemented stricter restrictions. This included launching a version of ChatGPT for users under 18, blocking graphic or sexual content.

Recently, OpenAI has been reducing these restrictions, including the possibility for adult users to have erotic conversations with AI programs like ChatGPT, as mental health issues are more controlled. This change is set to take effect in December 2025. Meanwhile, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has opened an investigation targeting several AI companies, including OpenAI.

The upcoming update to ChatGPT will allow for personalization, ready in a few weeks. The company continues to balance user freedom with mental health concerns, as seen in their recent changes and upcoming plans for adult users. The FTC's investigation adds another layer to the evolving landscape of AI regulation.
