OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Atlas; Moniepoint Secures $200M; MultiChoice Slashes DStv Prices

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Atlas, an AI-powered browser that allows users to interact with search results and complete tasks on websites. Meanwhile, Nigerian fintech Moniepoint is expanding its reach across Africa and beyond, securing a significant funding round and making strategic acquisitions. In other news, MultiChoice has announced a substantial price cut for DStv decoders in several African countries.

ChatGPT Atlas joins other AI browsers like Comet in transforming how users find and engage with information online. The browser, launched by OpenAI, enables users to chat with search results and perform small tasks on websites.

Moniepoint, a Nigerian fintech startup, is fueling its growth with a $200 million Series C funding round. The round was led by Development Partners International, with participation from LeapFrog Investments, Visa, the Africa Investment Fund of Google, and the International Finance Corporation (IFC). The exact valuation of their stakes was not disclosed, but it is one of the largest equity financings of an African fintech this year. Moniepoint also plans to launch MonieWorld, a remittance app, and has acquired Sumac Microfinance Bank in Kenya.

Optasia, a South African fintech, is eyeing a big public debut on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE). The company plans to raise $345 million, which would put its valuation at over $1 billion. Optasia uses AI algorithms to assess creditworthiness from unstructured information and distributes small loans through partners like M-Pesa and MoMo.

MultiChoice has announced a significant price cut for DStv decoders in South Africa, Nigeria, and Kenya. The price reduction, up to 40% in South Africa and 30-40% in Nigeria and Kenya, marks the first major price correction after years of subscriber decline.

The launch of ChatGPT Atlas signals a new era in browsing, allowing users to engage with information in a more interactive way. Moniepoint's expansion and Optasia's upcoming IPO demonstrate the growing potential of African fintech. MultiChoice's price cut aims to reverse subscriber losses and boost its customer base.
