OpenAI deepens India roots with new offices and local AI partnerships by 2025

OpenAI is expanding its presence in India, focusing on technical development and local partnerships. The company, already supporting 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, is now prioritizing deep engineering collaboration over policy discussions. A new office in New Delhi is planned by late 2025, with further expansions expected in Mumbai, Bengaluru, and beyond.

The US-based AI firm has appointed Arjun Gupta as India's first Solutions Architect. Gupta, a former startup founder and CTO of AuraML, brings expertise in robotics and data systems. He will join OpenAI's Go-To-Market team to help Indian startups refine their AI products.

OpenAI is also working closely with major Indian firms like Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). These partnerships aim to use local data centres, ensuring compliance with India's data localisation laws. CEO Sam Altman highlighted the country's rapid AI adoption, stating that OpenAI is committed to building AI 'with India, for India, and in India'.

Beyond New Delhi, the company plans to open offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru. Reports from 2026 suggest potential future expansions into Hyderabad, Dubai, and Singapore within the next two years.

The new offices and technical partnerships mark OpenAI's push to become a permanent part of India's digital economy. By offering specialized engineering support and local infrastructure, the company aims to strengthen AI development across the region. The move follows growing demand from Indian businesses and users.
