OPAL Venue in Mannheim Delayed, Set to Open in October 2024
The 'Oper am Luisenpark' (OPAL), the replacement venue for the National Theatre, is set to open in October 2024, two years behind schedule. The total construction costs amount to €25.4 million. The original completion date was December 2022, but it was delayed due to the insolvency of the responsible construction company. Despite the setback, the project is progressing steadily. The auditorium, stage, and seating are nearly complete at the construction site. The OPAL venue includes a performance hall, foyer with catering, restrooms, backstage area, and additional rooms for makeup, costumes, and tech. The stage measures 20 meters by 20 meters and features a turntable that can be moved by 160 rollers. The venue aims to make opera more accessible in Mannheim by being compact, easily accessible by various transportation methods, and bringing viewers closer to the action. OPAL is expected to be in use for four years, from mid-October 2024, after which it will be dismantled and repurposed. The search for a company to take over the technical management for the completion of the venue continues.
