Christmas Tree Faux Pas in Hanover
After the holiday festivities and a house full of relatives, the Hanover Christmas tree at the Marktkirche might have taken a beating. But things took a turn for the worse when the city officials decided to erect this 20-meter-tall tree, shipped in from Schleswig-Holstein.
Alas, the tree didn't quite make it unscathed. Some branches are missing, leaving the tree looking like it took a tumble during transportation. The undecorated, patchy appearance reminds some onlookers of a tree that's more suitable for the fireplace than the Christmas market.

Stephan Krause, a local hairdresser, vented his frustration on Facebook, posting a picture of the tree. "I was at the Marktkirche again with my glasses on and no sun," he wrote. "Hanover, are you serious? People were standing there laughing because they've never seen anything like it!"
Another critic wrote, "A wrecked spruce tree that can only be used for burning, but not as a decoration for the Christmas market... It could hardly be worse!"
Some commenters were a bit more forgiving, but not by much. A woman from Bavaria commented that it was "even worse than here," and a woman from Baden-Württemberg simply called it "ugly as hell."
A user from Schleswig-Holstein commented with three smiley faces, "They have good taste in Hanover," and one user suggested, "If you order your Christmas tree from Wish..."
The city officials have an excuse, though: transportation damage. They claim that branches broke off at a height of seven meters during transport. But locals and critics alike are skeptical that a little TLC and some decorations can salvage the tree before the Christmas market officially kicks off next Monday.
The market will feature a Finnish village, a medieval market, and a popular wishing well forest. The tree will be adorned with 2000 lights, but some still wonder if it's worth the effort.
Regardless of the tree's appearance, Hanover has other voices who call it a "miracle of nature," "a masterpiece," and a giver of life." Some also wonder, "Don't you have any other problems in Hanover?"
Despite the transportation mishap, Hanover plans to decorate the disheveled Christmas tree with 2000 lights for the upcoming Christmas market at Marktkirche.
