Election Commission of India Refutes Allegations of Voter Manipulation

In a series of developments, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a detailed rebuttal to allegations of voter manipulation levelled by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

Gandhi had accused Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of protecting those who 'destroyed democracy' and made fresh allegations of vote theft this week. His allegations were based on data from the Aland constituency in Karnataka, where he claimed that votes of Congress supporters were being systematically deleted.

However, the ECI has categorically denied these allegations. In a statement, the ECI stated that no wrongful deletion of electors in Aland constituency occurred. To investigate the suspicious deletion attempts, the ECI filed an FIR in 2024.

The ECI also clarified that electors can fill Form 7 online to apply for deletion of their entry from a constituency, but this does not mean the entry will automatically be deleted. The ECI cited the Registration of Electors Rules, stating that names are not deleted from the roll without issuing a notice to the affected person and giving them an opportunity of being heard.

Furthermore, the ECI stated that no vote can be deleted online by any member of the public. In Aland constituency, the ECI received over 6,000 applications to delete names from the voters' list, but only 24 were found to be valid and approved while 5,994 were rejected after verification.

Gandhi's allegations came weeks after he made similar claims about systemic deletions amounting to over 100,000 votes across India. In response to these allegations, the ECI had previously stated that no wrongful deletion of electors in Aland constituency occurred, and an FIR was registered against suspicious attempts of deletions in 2024.

A full inquiry remains underway regarding the suspicious deletion attempts in Aland constituency, with the ECI promising to take strict action against any wrongdoing. The ECI reiterated its commitment to fair and free live election results and urged the public to rely on verified information from official sources.
