Online commemoration, titled "Memory Candle", scheduled for May 7th

In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the annual "Candle of Memory" event in Yakutia has adapted to an online format this year. This tradition, which is held every year to honour and remember loved ones who participated in the Great Patriotic War, has been modified to ensure the safety of participants while maintaining the spirit of commemoration.

Participants are encouraged to join the event online by placing a candle in their window and sharing a photo of a relative who participated in the Great Patriotic War. They can also post photos or videos of their participation on social media using the hashtag #CandleOfMemoryYakutsk2020. The event will take place on the Instagram pages of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Social Communications, as well as the Ministry of Innovation, Digital Development, and Information and Communication Technology.

The "Candle of Memory" event is not limited to Yakutia and is held in honour of the 27 million people who died in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. On May 7, at 9 PM local time, candles will be lit in the windows of participants' homes across Yakutia, in memory of the victims of the Great Patriotic War.

For those seeking more specific instructions or access links for online participation in subsequent years, it is recommended to check official Yakutia cultural or governmental websites or local news sources closer to the event dates. It is important to note that Instagram is not recognized as extremist or banned in Yakutia, making it a viable platform for participation.

The "Candle of Memory" event is not just a local tradition, but an international one, held to remember all those who fell in battles for their homeland. This year's adaptation to an online format ensures that the tradition continues, even in the face of unprecedented challenges.

Despite the transition to an online format due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the "Candle of Memory" event continues to foster political discussions and general-news sharing about the Great Patriotic War. Participants can join the event on Instagram by sharing photos or videos of their participation using the hashtag #CandleOfMemoryYakutsk2020, as the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Social Communications and the Ministry of Innovation, Digital Development, and Information and Communication Technology will host the event on their Instagram pages.
