A recent online chess tournament brought together schoolchildren from Russia and China in a display of skill and friendship. The event, held entirely via video conference, allowed young players to compete while sharing experiences across borders. Local officials and cultural groups added to the occasion with greetings and performances before the matches began. The tournament kicked off with a festive programme by creative ensembles from Vladivostok’s School No. 9. Students performed vocal and dance numbers, setting a lively tone for the competition.
Participants received warm messages from key figures, including Vladivostok Mayor Konstantin Shestakov, who joined via video link. The Consul General of China in Vladivostok, Wu Demin, and Deputy Head of the Education Department, Irina Verbitskaya, also addressed the young competitors. Organisers stressed the tournament’s role in strengthening ties between the two nations. The Municipal Education Department noted that such events help popularise chess among children while fostering neighbourly relations. Despite the physical distance, the video format enabled smooth communication and friendly interaction throughout the games.
