Onion waste transformed into eco-friendly packaging by innovative startup

A new method for turning onion waste into sustainable packaging is gaining attention. CNN, the news outlet, has reported on HUID, the company behind the innovation, which has developed a pulp that blends with wood fibres to strengthen paper-based materials. The process also cuts energy use and reduces waste treatment needs compared to traditional wood pulping.

HUID’s technology converts onion skins and discarded layers into a pulp suitable for packaging. The material has already appeared in branding items and will soon be used in speciality packaging. Packaging manufacturers, paper mills, and retail brands have shown interest in the product.

The new pulp could soon appear in commercial packaging, offering a greener alternative to traditional materials. With certifications in progress and industry interest growing, HUID’s onion-based solution may help reduce waste while supporting farmers. The company’s pilot site will test whether the model can work at a larger scale.
