Thai-Cambodian Border Talks: A Stepping Stone Towards Peace?
In a recent update, Nikorndej Balankura, the Spokesperson for Thailand's Foreign Affairs Ministry, shed light on the ongoing Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) meeting with Cambodia.
The meeting, held in Phnom Penh, commenced on June 14, with Thailand's delegation led by Prasas Prasasvinitchai. The initial bilateral discussion took place in a smaller group, followed by a full JBC plenary session. Topics under discussion included technical matters such as the implementation of terrain survey technologies, essential in border demarcation.
As of now, the talks remain ongoing and are scheduled to continue through June 15. Nikorndej reported a positive and constructive atmosphere during the discussions, expressing hope that they would help de-escalate tensions and lead to a long-term resolution.
Regarding Cambodia's intention to refer four disputed border areas to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), Nikorndej maintained Thailand's position against the ICJ's jurisdiction, following the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister's long-standing stance. Thailand favors resolving issues through existing bilateral mechanisms and diplomatic channels, which they claim have already produced positive results, like the construction of the Thai-Cambodian Friendship Bridge.
In response to questions about the disputed points and the alleged violation of the 2000 MOU at Chong Bok in Ubon Ratchathani, Nikorndej stated that talks are still in progress, and he has no additional details to disclose at this time.
Rumors have swirled about leaked chat messages suggesting that Prasas had accepted Cambodia's use of a 1:200,000-scale map. However, Nikorndej has not verified the facts and is merely monitoring the meeting, promising to share updates as they become available.
As the JBC meeting continues, both sides are working diligently to find a solution that will bring lasting peace to the Thai-Cambodian border, under the shadow of existing tensions and parallel legal proceedings at the ICJ.
