Ongoing Nuclear Controversy: Iran Prepared to Collaborate with the International Atomic Energy Agency in a Modified Manner - Ongoing nuclear contention: Iran to proceed with collaboration with IAEA in a modified way

Amidst heightened geopolitical tensions, the nuclear standoff between Iran and the international community remains a pressing issue. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been at the forefront of monitoring Iran's nuclear activities, but cooperation has become strained following recent events.

In a significant development, Iran suspended cooperation with the IAEA in June 2025, a move that has raised concerns about nuclear safety and the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The IAEA inspectors, who were present in Iran, have since left the country, and as of now, no statements have been released regarding future inspections of Iranian nuclear facilities.

The suspension of cooperation came after a 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel, during which Israel launched a major attack on Iranian nuclear and military facilities on June 13. The conflict ended with a ceasefire on June 24, but it has not affected the ongoing nuclear dispute between Iran and the international community, particularly the United States.

The attack on Iranian nuclear sites, such as Natanz, posed grave safety and environmental risks, as confirmed by the IAEA. Despite the impact, no immediate radiation release was reported, underscoring the dangers of military attacks on nuclear installations, which also violate international law.

Diplomatic efforts have been ongoing. Iran has been engaged in separate talks with European countries, China, Russia, and the United States, brokered by Oman. However, a planned sixth round of US-Iran talks in June 2025 was canceled after the Israeli strikes. The IAEA continues to advocate for dialogue and diplomacy as essential for peace and stability in the region.

The Iranian government has not made any public statements regarding future decisions on IAEA requests to monitor Iranian nuclear facilities. The Supreme National Security Council of Iran will review future requests on a case-by-case basis, considering security aspects in their decisions. The Iranian government has also announced that it will continue its nuclear program.

The United States intervened on Israel's side during the conflict, but as of now, it has not publicly announced any intentions to intervene in the ongoing nuclear dispute between Iran and the international community.

The nuclear dispute is far from over. Iran has rejected a resolution by the IAEA Board of Governors, which formally found Iran non-compliant with its nuclear safeguards obligations for the first time since 2005. Iran has also accelerated its nuclear activities, although experts agree that Iran has not yet moved toward weaponization, a process that would take months or years.

The capital city of Iran, Tehran, has not issued any statements regarding the resumption of cooperation with the IAEA. The Iranian government has stated that the discussions regarding its nuclear program will be handled by Abbas Araghtchi, the deputy foreign minister for political affairs.

In the face of these challenges, the IAEA remains engaged, emphasizing nuclear safety and the peaceful use of nuclear energy, while warning of serious risks from the conflict. The agency continues to advocate diplomatic solutions to avoid escalation and maintain peace and stability in the region.

  1. Amidst the ongoing nuclear dispute with the international community, the EC countries, particularly the United States, are urged to reconsider their policies towards Iran, focusing on cooperation policy as a means to de-escalate the situation and foster peace and stability in the region.
  2. The suspension of cooperation between Iran and the IAEA has raised concerns about nuclear safety and the peaceful use of nuclear energy, highlighting the importance of general news reporting and politics in understanding the war-and-conflicts context in the Middle East, where diplomatic efforts are desperately needed for resolution.
