Ongoing Job Reports from the White House Despite Questions Regarding Accuracy

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has continued to publish its monthly employment reports, despite concerns raised by the nominee for BLS commissioner, E.J. Antoni.

Antoni, the current chief economist at the conservative Heritage Foundation, has previously criticized the data quality under former President Joe Biden's administration. He suggested suspending the publication of the monthly report and continuing with more accurate but less timely quarterly figures, a proposal made before his nomination was announced.

The suggestion to suspend the publication of the BLS's monthly employment report was met with a response from White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who stated that the employment report, specifically the "Employment Situation" report published by the BLS, will continue as planned.

The BLS commissioner was replaced by President Donald Trump on Aug 2, 2023, but the nominee to head the BLS is not specified in the text. Antoni has stated that major decision-makers rely on the BLS numbers and a lack of confidence in the data has far-reaching consequences.

The BLS reports continue to include detailed data on total nonfarm payroll employment, unemployment rates, and other labor market indicators, with revisions noted as part of the normal data refinement process conducted by the BLS. The agency provides transparency about revisions and the benchmarking process to maintain data quality and accuracy.

Thus, the BLS is operating as usual, maintaining its public releases of labor statistics on a monthly basis. However, the future of the monthly employment report may be influenced by the confirmation of Antoni as BLS commissioner and his ongoing concerns about data accuracy.
