In the eastern German states of Saxony and Thuringia, two large forest fires are currently burning, fueled by a severe heatwave that has pushed temperatures close to 40°C (104°F). The fires, which have spread over approximately 1,000 hectares (~2,470 acres) combined, are causing significant concerns for local communities and emergency services.

In the Gohrischheide region of Saxony, a major wildfire has engulfed around 200 hectares and is advancing northwards, despite ongoing firefighting efforts. Meanwhile, in Thuringia, near Gosselsdorf, the state’s largest forest fire in three decades has expanded to about 300 hectares.

The fires are primarily attributed to the ongoing heatwave, which has significantly dried vegetation and created intense fire conditions across eastern Germany. In addition, firefighting in Saxony is complicated by the presence of unexploded ordnance on a former military training ground.

The fires have prompted states of emergency in several towns in Saxony, including Zeithain, Wulknitz, and Groditz, as the blazes threaten nearby populated areas. Approximately 1,000 firefighters and emergency personnel have been mobilized to combat the wildfires in both Saxony and Thuringia, highlighting the scale and severity of the situation.

The intense fires and heatwave pose ongoing risks to public safety and local infrastructure. There have been some reported injuries, including two firefighters who sustained serious injuries during operations.

In an effort to contain the blazes, hundreds of firefighters, along with the technical relief agency (THW) and other aid organizations, are deployed in Saxony. In Thuringia, efforts are expected to continue at least until the beginning of next week. The wind, which has increased, is causing difficulties in fighting fires in steep terrain.

The fire in the Gohrisch heath on the border between Saxony and Brandenburg is spreading at several points, with the district of Neudorf in Zeithain being evacuated at times but residents since returning. The fire fighting in Thuringia is expected to continue due to the munition-contaminated forest in Wülknitz reaching the houses, necessitating ongoing efforts to ensure that no sparks jump over to the houses.

The state of emergency in Thuringia is not expected to be lifted, despite the situation being stable. Experts on site are concerned about the weather, as there are no major rainfall expected for the weekend.

In conclusion, the record-breaking heat and dry conditions have led to severe forest fires covering hundreds of hectares in eastern Germany. The situation is causing significant threats to local communities in Saxony and Thuringia, with major firefighting mobilization underway to combat the wildfires.

Other environmental-science studies might delve into the impacts of extreme weather events, such as the current heatwave, on the prevalence and intensity of wildfires in various regions. Despite the ongoing efforts of firefighters, the weather forecast predicts no significant rainfall for the weekend, posing continued challenges for the fire suppression teams in both Saxony and Thuringia.
