Ongoing Discussion Between Trump and Putin Continues
Anchorage Summit: Trump and Putin Meet, but No Breakthroughs
The ongoing summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, is still underway as of the time of writing. The meeting, which took place at Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson, marks Putin's first visit to a Western country since the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
The initial summit, which lasted about three and a half hours instead of the six hours initially planned, covered two main diplomatic tracks—renewing bilateral relations and seeking peace in Ukraine. However, no agreements on business or peace were reached.
Despite hopes for progress, including Trump’s attempt to position himself as a peacemaker, public outcomes were limited. Putin also arrived with a business delegation aiming for economic deals, but these talks did not materialize into signed agreements. The US side reportedly refused to discuss economic incentives without progress on ending the war.
The summit is taking place behind closed doors, but an expanded meeting with other staff is expected to take place before the planned joint press conference. Details about the expected expanded meeting, including its time and specific agenda, have not been disclosed.
Noteworthy participants in the summit include US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, as well as the Russian delegation.
The latest update on the summit comes from platform X, which posted the information at 13:25 local time. As of now, no concrete deal has been announced, particularly on resolving the Russo-Ukrainian War. The summit's conclusion leaves the situation unresolved, with the burden seemingly shifted to Ukraine to concede territory to end the conflict, as suggested by Trump[1][3].
