One of the selected films will represent Germany at the Oscars.
Germany has submitted five films for consideration in the Best International Feature Film category for the 98th Academy Awards, scheduled for March 15, 2026. These films are:
- AMRUM by Fatih Akin, featuring Diane Kruger
- CRANKO (JOHN CRANKO) by Joachim A. Lang, starring Sam Riley
- RIEFENSTAHL by Andres Veiel, a documentary produced by Sandra Maischberger
- SOUND OF FALLING (IN DIE SONNE SCHAUEN) by Mascha Schilinski, winner of a prize at Cannes
- THE TIGER (DER TIGER) by Dennis Gansel
An independent jury of experts will decide which film will represent Germany in the prestigious category. The final selection will be announced on January 22, 2026, with the shortlist of 15 titles being revealed on December 16.
The German Films organisation, the country's film industry's external representative, will announce the result on August 21. It's important to note that the chosen film is not guaranteed to make it to the shortlist or be nominated.
The Oscar ceremony will take place on March 15, 2026, local time, which will be a Monday morning in Germany. The ceremony will mark the culmination of a journey that begins with the submission of films and ends with the crowning of the best international film.
Stay tuned for updates as Germany prepares to send its representative to the global stage of the Academy Awards.
