Germany is set to represent the international film industry at the 98th Academy Awards with a strong lineup of five contenders for the Best International Film category. The five films, yet to be officially announced, have been shortlisted by the German film industry's external representative, German Films.

One of the announced candidates is "In die Sonne schauen" by Mascha Schilinski, which recently won a prize at Cannes. Another contender is the documentary "Riefenstahl," directed by Andres Veiel and produced by Sandra Maischberger. "Riefenstahl" is also a part of the German lineup, adding a historical perspective to the selection.

In addition, Joachim Lang's film "Cranko," featuring Sam Riley, is another German candidate. "Amrum," directed by Fatih Akin and starring Diane Kruger, is another noteworthy entry. The fifth film in the shortlist remains undisclosed due to the lack of available information.

The independent jury of experts will decide which of the five films will be submitted for the Best International Film category. The nominations for this prestigious category will be announced on January 22, 2026. The shortlist of 15 titles for the Best International Film category will be announced on December 16.

The selection of a German film does not guarantee it will make it to the shortlist or ultimately be nominated. The 98th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, March 15, 2026 (local time, Monday morning in Germany). The result of Germany's selection will be announced by German Films on August 21.

While the identities of four out of the five films are yet to be revealed, "The Seed of the Sacred Fig" by Mohammad Rasoulof has already gained international recognition and awards, making it a strong contender for the coveted Oscar. The anticipation for the remaining films in Germany's lineup is palpable as the countdown to the Academy Awards begins.
