Hot Air Balloon Tragedy in Turkey's Aksaray Province

One individual has been killed, with 19 others injured in the incident.

It was a chilling morning in the scenic Ihlara Valley of Aksaray, Turkey – a renowned tourist destination – when two hot air balloons took flight, only to come crashing down due to treacherous winds, claims Liter.kz and YeniSafak.

Initial investigations suggest the balloons plummeted soon after takeoff, succumbing to swift wind gusts that swept through the valley. One unfortunate soul lost their life, while a staggering 19 individuals suffered injuries of varying severity.

As per Aksaray Governor Mehmet Ali Kumbruzoglu's official statement, the disaster transpired around sunrise. One balloon was forced into an emergency landing, while the second crashed into another part of the valley. The governor attributed the accident to sudden, erratic shifts in wind direction and velocity, despite optimal conditions for flight initially.

The pilot of one balloon, the late Hüseyin Türk, perished at the scene. He met a tragic end after tumbling out of the basket and being entangled beneath the shattered balloon structure. The remaining 19 injured, mostly Indonesian tourists, were swiftly evacuated to Aksaray State Hospital, where most now stabilize with no imminent danger to their lives.

In the aftermath, all hot air balloon rides in the valley have been indefinitely halted pending a thorough examination of the incident and assessment for safety measures.

Previously, Turkey's traditional Kurban Bayram festival was marred by worrisome statistics: more than 14,000 individuals sought medical attention following SLASH-related accidents on the festival's opening day.
