One Dead, Many Injured as Indonesian School Building Collapses

A building collapse at Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School in Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia, has left at least one student dead and many injured. The incident occurred when a school building caved in, trapping students inside. Authorities suspect an unauthorized expansion as the cause.

The collapse happened during school hours, with students aged 12 to 17 trapped under the rubble. Rescuers worked tirelessly through the night to free survivors, eventually pulling out eight injured students more than eight hours after the incident. However, fears of another collapse temporarily suspended rescue efforts.

Heavy concrete and unstable building parts hindered the search and rescue operation. A notice board listed 65 students as missing, with families anxiously awaiting news of their children at hospitals and the collapsed building. As of now, 65 students are presumed buried in the rubble, with one confirmed fatality and dozens injured.

No party has officially taken responsibility for the unauthorized expansion and subsequent collapse. Authorities are investigating the cause and extent of the damage. The fate of the missing students remains uncertain, with families and the community eagerly awaiting further updates.
