Things were sailing smoothly for Boris Herrmann in the Retour à La Base transatlantic race. But St. Nicholas Day brought about some technical issues - and an unwelcome guest in the form of water. After a grueling night, Herrmann found himself scooping seawater out with his bare hands. His team, Malizia, announced that he needed time to recuperate before implementing an intricate repair plan in the heart of the Atlantic.
Herrmann, a top German sailor, had been cruising among the top five soloists until Tuesday evening, when the engine gave him troubles. Engines in racing yachts, though not used for propulsion in races, provide power for onboard systems.
