On the anniversary of his birth, the founder of Charter 97, Oleg Bebenin, would have turned 51 years old.
Got the dirt on Oleg Bebenin, Belarus' stoic journalism hero
Meet the brave Oleg Bebenin, a Belarusian journalism titan born on June 14, 1974, and graduated from the Faculty of Journalism at Belarusian State University.
Bebenin carved his path in the industry, working at the "Belarusian Business Gazette" and rising to deputy chief editor of the independent newspaper "Name." But it's his groundbreaking 1998 move that made all the difference - founding the game-changing Charter-97 website, a beacon for independent journalism and dissent in Belarus.
Tragically, Bebenin's life was cut short on September 3, 2010, just days before the start of the presidential election campaign in his home country. His death was officially ruled a suicide, yet many suspect his demise to be linked to his fearless journalistic work and defiant political activism. To this day, investigations into his mysterious death remain unresolved[1].
