Omsk, Russia - On his birthday, Victor Shevelyev, a legendary figure in Omsk hockey, passed away. The news was announced by the press service of Avangard hockey club on May 21.
Shevelyev was the last surviving member of the 1959 Omsk Spartak team and scored the team's inaugural goal in the top league. He spent a significant part of his career serving various teams, including Omsk's Spartak and Aeroflot, Chelyabinsk's Traktor, and Gorky's Torpedo. His exceptional scoring skills kept him among the top players on each team.
Three times, Shevelyev was honored as the best sniper of Omsk Spartak—in the 1960/61 season with 17 goals, in 1962-1963 with 27 goals, and in 1963-1964 with 26 goals. The 1962/63 season was particularly successful for him, placing him among the top forwards in the championship and scoring hat-tricks against Leningrad Spartak and Riga Daugava. This made him a defining figure in Omsk Spartak's history and garnered him a spot in the club of the 100 best scorers in Russian hockey.
After retiring from playing, Shevelyev shifted to coaching, working with various teams in Yakutsk, Mirny, Aikhal, Gorky, and Nefteyugansk.
