New Ministry of Sports Led by Olympic Gold Medalist Lee Yang

The Ministry of Sports, previously the Sports Administration under the Ministry of Education, has been upgraded to a Cabinet-level ministry and began operation on September 9, National Sports Day. The new ministry, headed by Lee Yang, is expected to boost Taiwan's sports performance.

Lee Yang, a 30-year-old Olympic gold medalist in badminton men's doubles, has been appointed as the minister of the new ministry. Born in 1995, Lee Yang is the youngest minister ever appointed in Taiwan.

Lee Yang's impressive sports career includes winning gold in both the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and the 2024 Paris Olympics. His dedication to sports is not limited to the court, as he reportedly gave up commercial deals worth nearly NT$30 million to serve as the minister.

The report states that Lee Yang sacrificed commercial deals, not shares or stocks. This move demonstrates his commitment to the role and his desire to focus on the development of Taiwan's sports sector.

While Lee Yang is the minister of the Ministry of Sports, Chen Yi-hsin, a baseball star, has been appointed as the deputy minister of the Council of Indigenous Peoples, not the Ministry of Sports.

The formation of the new Ministry of Sports is significant, as it reflects the government's commitment to prioritising sports and supporting athletes. With Lee Yang at the helm, Taiwan's sports scene is poised for a boost in performance and recognition on the global stage.
