Olekminisk Council Session Cancelled: Direct Mayoral Elections in Limbo
Today's scheduled Olekminisk city council session was cancelled due to insufficient quorum. Two United Russia members were absent, leading to the cancellation. The session was rescheduled to October 6.
The session was intended to vote on direct mayoral elections. If deputies had voted 'for', elections would have been held on November 30. However, a tactic of disrupting quorum is suspected to have been employed to prevent or influence this vote. Representatives of higher authorities advised deputies not to attend the session. If deputies had voted 'against', the State Assembly - Il Tumen would have approved a procedure for appointing heads of settlements and districts, bypassing elections.
The cancelled session has delayed the decision on direct mayoral elections in Olekminisk. The rescheduled session on October 6 will now determine whether elections will proceed as planned on November 30 or if the appointment procedure will be approved.
