Oktoberfest Wiesnchef Hops into Hotel for the Festivities
Festivities translocate to the hotel, orchestrated by the Wiesn Leader - Oktoberfest Organizer Switches to Hotel Accommodation for the Celebrations.
Freshly appointed Wiesnchef and Economic Affairs Referent Christian Scharpf (SPD) is swapping his family's Maxvorstadt district digs for a hotel room at Oktoberfest headquarters—all for the sake of convenience. "I've decked myself out with a room smack-dab at the Wiesn, at my own expense, to scoot around promptly at a moment's notice during Oktoberfest's peak," Scharpf shared with the German Press Agency.
Here's the lowdown: South of Oktoberfest, it's a stroll in the park; but during the festivities, the nearby train stations and U- and S-bahns become a stampede, while even a simple jaunt to the festival grounds becomes a game of stop-and-go.
Rise and Wiesnshine
Scharpf's early morning starts align with the security authorities' early bird meetings to strategize for the busy day ahead. "I've got a jam-packed schedule of meetings, with one appointment hot on the heels of the next. Keeping a clear head is crucial to ensure everything runs smoothly," he noted. A self-proclaimed passionate Wiesn-goer, Scharpf has a deep affection for the festivities, tracing his love for Oktoberfest back to his days as a law student in Munich.
Loud Talks and Throat Sweets
Scharpf's job extends beyond ensuring the event's smooth operation. Networking events for associations, organizations, and businesses run rampant during the two-week celebration, and Scharpf is there to represent. However, shouting above the chatter in the beer tents tends to take its toll on the vocal cords. "The din is deafening, taking its toll on the ol' vocal chords," Scharpf shared. To preserve his voice, he'll stock up on throat lozenges beforehand. "But honestly, I'm psyched for the encounters—that's part of the experience."
Breakdance is where he loves to spin his steins. "It can get wild, with high speeds, but without the vertigo vibes. I ain't afraid of heights," he quipped.
Hotel Wiesn Stays in Style
When Scharpf decided to bunk at the festival grounds, he followed in the footsteps of his predecessor, Clemens Baumgaertner (CSU). "Baumgaertner paved the way, and I chased his lead," Scharpf stated. Booking well ahead of his confirmation as the new Munich Economic Affairs Referent, Scharpf managed to score accommodations as Oktoberfest hotel bookings tend to get scooped up quick.
Baumgaertner first gave the hotel-on-site idea a whirl in 2022, opting for a hotel location within the festival grounds for the convenience of emergency situations. Long days or nights at the festivities are par for the course for the Wiesnchef, making the proximity of a hotel that much more essential.
Munich locals know this annual event as Oktoberfest, while the SPD, German Press Agency, Maxvorstadt, and the city of Munich are integral parts of the story.
