Oilers face Sharks with Ekholm's status uncertain and defence under scrutiny

The Edmonton Oilers prepare to face the San Jose Sharks on Thursday, but uncertainty surrounds defenceman Mattias Ekholm's availability. Head coach Kris Knoblauch has labelled him as day-to-day, leaving his status unclear for the upcoming game. Meanwhile, the team looks to tighten its defence after allowing too many goals in recent wins.

Ekholm has been a key offensive threat from the blueline, recording three goals and four assists in his last five games. His potential absence could see Darnell Nurse and Spencer Stastney stepping in alongside Jake Walman, who has impressed since returning from injury on 13 January. Both Nurse and Stastney have contributed crucial goals in recent matches, suggesting they could form an effective pairing if needed.

The Oilers' defence has shown flashes of brilliance, including a historic second-period performance against the Anaheim Ducks. During that game, they scored the four fastest goals by defencemen in franchise history. Yet, despite winning their last two matches with a combined 13 goals scored, the team aims to reduce the number of goals conceded to ease pressure on goaltenders Connor Ingram and Stuart Skinner.

Ingram will start in net against the Sharks, backing a projected lineup featuring stars like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. The Oilers' focus remains on balancing offensive firepower with defensive solidity as they push for consistency in the second half of the season.

If Ekholm sits out, Nurse and Stastney are likely to fill the gap, building on their recent performances. The Oilers will rely on Ingram's goaltending and a disciplined defensive effort to secure another win. Their ability to limit scoring chances could prove just as important as their offensive output in the match ahead.
