Oil executive expresses optimism over Connor McDavid signing long-term contract
In the heart of the hockey season, the Edmonton Oilers find themselves in a unique predicament as their star forward, Connor McDavid, enters the final year of his eight-year, $100 million contract. The 26-year-old phenom, who was drafted as the No. 1 overall pick in 2015, has been consistently linked to contract extension discussions, but as of September 2025, no deal has been officially signed or renewed.
McDavid, a four-time winner of the Ted Lindsay Award for league MVP, has been open about his contract discussions with the media. General Manager Stan Bowman remains optimistic that McDavid will agree to a long-term contract extension, expressing confidence in their conversations.
Bowman stated that McDavid has been consistent in their discussions about the extension and takes him at his word. When asked about McDavid signing an extension, Bowman responded that McDavid is going through his own process and will be ready when he is.
Last season, McDavid scored 26 goals and had 74 assists in 67 games, reaching 100 points for the fifth consecutive season and the eighth time in the past nine seasons. He has earned the Art Ross Trophy for leading the league in points five times.
McDavid's career statistics are impressive, with 361 goals, 721 assists, and 1,082 points in 712 games. He has led the team in points for eight seasons out of nine, and his contributions have helped the Oilers make the playoffs for six consecutive seasons. The team's star forward has also led the Oilers to the Stanley Cup Finals in each of the past two seasons.
Meanwhile, McDavid's teammate, Leon Draisaitl, is set to be the highest-paid player in the NHL this season at $16.5 million. Despite the financial implications, Bowman stated that McDavid wants nothing more than to win in Edmonton.
As the season progresses, Oilers fans and hockey enthusiasts worldwide will eagerly await news of McDavid's decision regarding his future with the team. With McDavid's consistent performance and leadership, the Oilers will undoubtedly be hoping for a favourable outcome in their contract negotiations.
