In the early hours of August 4, 2025, a drone attack struck Sochi, Russia, targeting an oil depot in the southern city. The incident, reported by the governor of the Krasnodar region, Veniamine Kondratiev, via Telegram, sparked a fire that raged for over 11 hours.

The attack was allegedly carried out by the Ukrainian regime, according to local authorities, and is part of a broader strategy by Ukraine to disrupt Russia's energy and military logistics. Images of flames and thick plumes of black smoke rising from the site were broadcast by Russian media, but the authenticity of these images could not be verified by AFP.

The fire at the oil depot caused a massive explosion, significantly damaging the fuel storage infrastructure in Sochi. This strike is one of several Ukrainian drone attacks that have hit oil refineries, storage units, military targets, and energy infrastructure, forcing Russia to reallocate air defense resources.

The attack on Sochi's oil depot represented a major blow to the region's infrastructure, impairing Russia's ability to maintain military fuel logistics and exerting long-term economic pressure amid ongoing conflict and sanctions. While no direct civilian casualties from the Sochi attack have been reported, security and authorities later fined local civilians who inappropriately filmed the burning depot during the emergency, indicating strict control measures post-incident.

Sochi, the location of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, was affected further as air traffic was temporarily suspended at Sochi airport due to the incident. Overnight, 127 firefighters were working tirelessly to extinguish the blaze.

The Kremlin has rejected the idea of a lasting ceasefire in Ukraine, which it sees as a gift to Kyiv's troops. Ukrainian authorities have not commented on the fire at the oil depot in Sochi. Meanwhile, Kyiv has warned it will intensify its air strikes against Russia in response to an increase in Russian attacks on its territory in recent weeks, which have left dozens of civilians dead.
