Ogun Government and Gbenga Daniel Disagree Over Construction of Road Infrastructure

In a recent development, the Ogun State Government has emphasised the importance of following due process in all road projects within the state. This comes after Minim and Tonye Nigeria Limited, the contractor handling a road project, was asked to suspend work until the necessary permits were obtained.

The roads in question include the Sokanmade Road, Ewuga; Oko and Ada Road, Simawa; Ita Maro to Ilara Road; and Alhaja Ogunsanya Street, Irolu. The request for approval to build these rural roads was submitted by a former member, Hon. Adewunmi Onanuga, in 2021.

The directive was issued by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works, Yusuf L.O., who emphasised the need for adherence to the rules and regulations governing road construction in the state. According to the statement issued by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Media and Strategy to Governor Dapo Abiodun, no repair work can be carried out on a road without obtaining the necessary permission.

This insistence on due process is not a new policy for the Ogun State Government. In the past, projects such as the Abeokuta-Sagamu Ota road were unable to be repaired until approval was granted by the then Minister of Works, Babatunde Fashola.

However, the directive has not been without criticism. Steve Oloyede, media aide to Gbenga Daniel, former Governor of Ogun State, accused the state government's directive as politically motivated. Gbenga Daniel himself has criticised the current Ogun State Government over a 'stop work' order on a road reconstruction project in Sagamu.

In response to these criticisms, the Ogun State Government has dismissed the allegation as "egregious falsehood." The government accused critics of deliberate mischief in equating asking a contractor to obtain necessary approval before working on a state road to stopping the project because of alleged political hostility. The government reiterated its commitment to transparency and accountability in all its dealings.

In conclusion, the Ogun State Government remains firm in its stance on the importance of following due process in all road projects. The contractor, Minim and Tonye Nigeria Limited, has been asked to obtain the necessary clearance before resuming work on the roads in question. The government will continue to uphold the principles of transparency, accountability, and adherence to the law in all its projects.
