Officials probe following destructive fire obliterating well-liked Irish seaside trail walk.

Devastating Fire Engulfs Popular Irish Coastal Trail

Authorities are currently investigating a destructive fire that ravaged the Claggan Coastal trail in Wild Nephin National Park, Ballycroy, County Mayo, Ireland. The blaze, whose cause remains unclear, destroyed the 1.2-mile boardwalk trail and scorched more than just the immediate surroundings.

The fire, suspected to be man-made, occurred last Friday night (April 5). In addition to the Claggan Coastal trail, a second fire engulfed the nearby Letterkeen woodland area, forcing evacuation of campers.

Prior to the calamity, the Claggan Coastal trail was a hub of activity, attracting hikers and school groups. According to a statement on Instagram from Wild Nephin National Park, the trail provided an ideal platform for guided walks and educational programs, where the importance of bogs and the impact of activities on wildlife was taught to students.

Investigations into the origin of the fires are being carried out in collaboration with local authorities by Ireland's National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS). Although a definitive cause has yet to be established, the NPWS suspects that the blazes are human-induced.

In a statement, Director General Niall Ó Donnchú called for those responsible to consider the severe repercussions of their actions and to face the full force of the law. The Claggan Coastal trail will remain closed while the investigation is ongoing, with repair work postponed until a cause is ascertained.

The fires may have been exacerbated by the dry, warm conditions in Wild Nephin National Park, which experts say facilitate wildfires, with even seemingly innocuous actions such as discarded cigarettes or improperly extinguished campfires potentially triggering significant conflagrations.

As hiking enthusiasts gear up for spring and summer excursions, it is advisable to take precautions and exercise caution in dry conditions. Avoid leaving open fires unattended, steer clear of burning or discarding waste materials, and exercise care with potentially flammable equipment like portable camping stoves.
