Headlining News: The Commanders' Homecoming!
Catch the pulse of sports by digging into our latest headlines on Foxnews.com. Here's the scoop on the shocking news that has everyone talking – the Washington Commanders are returning to their historic roots!
In a groundbreaking deal announced on April 28, 2025, Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Commanders struck a historic agreement to return to Washington, D.C., where the team originated and played for three decades. The deal is under review by the D.C. City Council.
The return to D.C., reminiscent of old times, is celebrated in the Commanders' nostalgic video featuring former Super Bowl-winning quarterback Joe Theismann. "The time is now," Theismann proclaimed, adding a hopeful note: "Let's bring Washington back to D.C."
The team played at RFK Stadium from 1961 to 1996 before moving to Landover, Maryland, in a move initially spearheaded by the former team owner, Daniel Snyder. Recently, the team's owner, Josh Harris, has been considering various sites for a new stadium.
Rumors circled that Harris might prefer an alternative location, but it seems the allure of returning to the team's roots has proven too strong.
Meanwhile, congressional lawmakers supported Harris' pursuit of the old RFK Stadium site under the condition that the team and the NFL would honor the old Redskins logo in some way. Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., voiced his support, citing the significance of the logo connection to the Blackfeet Tribe of Montana.
"Based on good faith negotiations, I made a decision to support this bill yesterday in the committee." Daines shared in November 2024. While Harris has yet to publicly address the logo issue, indications are a positive conclusion may be close.
The plan anticipates a 2030 opening for the new stadium, which is expected to be a $3.4 billion to $3.7 billion project, featuring a 65,000-capacity, roofed arena[1][3][4]. The Commanders are expected to invest at least $2.7 billion, while D.C. will contribute up to $850 million for eligible capital costs and infrastructure[1][3][4]. Planning for the surrounding area will begin in Summer/Fall 2025, with site ground-breaking set for Fall/Winter 2026.
As this turbulent saga unwinds, it certainly marks an exciting and historic moment for the Commanders and the Nation’s Capital! Be sure to catch more coverage on our website and download our handy app for immediate updates. Here's to a grand return to the nation's capital!
