Government Operationalizes Three New Sub-Counties in Kakamega County

The Kenyan government has taken a significant step towards operationalizing three new sub-counties in Malava Constituency, Kakamega County. These new units, Kabras East, Chemuche, and Kabras West, were gazetted last year but had not been implemented until now[1][3].

The operationalization of these sub-counties is part of a broader national plan to establish 1,105 new administrative units across Kenya during the 2024/2025 financial year. The goal is to enhance administrative efficiency and improve government service delivery to citizens[1][2].

Principal Secretary for Internal Security, Dr. Raymond Omollo, made these announcements during a function at Tande Secondary School[2]. Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs CS Musalia Mudavadi, who was also present at the function, was not mentioned by Dr. Omollo in his speech.

With these additions, Kakamega County will have a total of fifteen sub-counties. The operationalization extends beyond sub-counties to include other units like divisions, locations, and sub-locations.

Dr. Omollo emphasized that the Social Health Authority (SHA) has significantly eased the financial burden on salaried Kenyans. He mentioned that the reduction in medical bill contributions is due to the increased enrollment in the SHA, which has reached 25 million members[2]. However, he did not discuss the scheduled operationalization for the 2024/2025 financial year.

Regarding security operations in Kakamega, Dr. Omollo assured security officers that the government will renew the lease for police vehicles. He did not mention any plans to renew the lease for police vehicles in the current context.

Dr. Omollo also praised the government's affordable housing programme for creating jobs and empowering local Jua Kali artisans. However, he did not discuss the affordable housing programme or its impact on job creation and empowerment of local artisans during his speech.

Contrary to expectations, cases of people being added to WhatsApp groups for medical bill contributions have significantly reduced, according to Dr. Omollo. It is more likely for individuals to be added to WhatsApp groups for funeral expenses, he added.

The operationalization of these sub-counties will raise Kakamega's total number of sub-counties to 15. The government is yet to announce the operationalization of the remaining 1,092 new administrative units as part of the broader national plan.

The operationalization of the new sub-counties in Kakamega County is a critical step in policy-and-legislation, as it aligns with the national plan to establish more administrative units for improved government service delivery. This development falls under the general news category, especially considering the broader implications for the future of health services, infrastructure, and job creation within the county and beyond.
