Officers under investigation faces charges of misappropriating funds from Rosario Police Department.
In the heart of the ongoing investigation into the alleged embezzlement of funds meant for fuel in Rosario, it's been disclosed that the involved suspects, including top brass officers, are set to be formally charged next week. This high-profile case was initiated by prosecutor José Luis Caterina, who collaborated with the Subsecretariat of Control of the Ministry of Justice and Security of Santa Fe, following an anonymous tip-off sent by mail. The allegations of corruption involve several logistics, enabling, and high-ranking officers from various units such as the Infantry Guard Corps, the Radioelectric Command, the Multipurpose Tactical Group, and the Logistics Division, among others.
According to Caterina, large sums of money have been misappropriated, with an estimate of around 45 million pesos stolen from the public coffers. "This is as plain as day – the state is being plundered," Caterina declared. Among the suspected officers are sub-inspectors, commissioners, an inspector, an employee, and an inspector from different units, identified by their initials as J.A., F.T., S.L., R.S., J.P., J.V., F.C., N.P., J.D., G.B., and F.C., according to local news outlet La Capital.
Provincial government intervention and the execution of 38 search warrants this week targeted the Rosario Police, including the residence of a lawyer, service stations, and other private homes. The minister of security, Pablo Cococcioni, detailed the operations had included the office of the then head of the Regional Unit II, Daniel Acosta, as well as high-ranking officials. Although Acosta was removed from his position, he is not among the suspects, and retired commissioner Claudio Romano has been appointed as interim head of the unit. Cell phones were also seized as evidence.
Beyond the economic implications, the network of several police departments seemed to profit from the sensitive area of public safety. The investigation is ongoing, although it has temporarily been put on hold. Prosecutor Caterina, regional Matias Merlo, and head of the Security Ministry acknowledged their commendable work in uncovering this complex corruption case.
