Officers under accusation of plotting a Parliament attack awarded recognition for outstanding service
A PSP Agent's Shocking Allegiance
In a startling turn of events, a PSP police officer named Bruno Napoleão Gonçalves has been arrested for his involvement in a neo-Nazi group. This isn't the only controversial aspect of the story—the officer was once a candidate for the Lisbon Municipal Assembly.
Bruno Napoleão Gonçalves, along with other leaders such as Bruno Carrilho, Tânia Lages, and notably a truck driver, formed the core of this extremist organization. Their intentions were to amass an arsenal for potential attacks on state figures and symbols.
The Public Prosecutor's Office reveals that Bruno Carrilho had the role of finding suitable candidates for an armed militia. He would evaluate the candidates' radicalization levels, and Bruno Napoleão Gonçalves, the PSP officer, was in charge of conducting personal interviews for membership inclusion. The Office reports that the group selected hundreds of militants, favoring those with expertise in handling weapons.
SIC's investigation uncovered evidence of the PSP agent's extremist ideology infiltrating politics. A document from 2021 suggests that among the candidates for the Lisbon Municipal Assembly indicated by Ergue-te, Bruno Napoleão Gonçalves ranked 15th. The PSP's statute prohibits active political participation, and the Organic Law of the parties restricts security forces from registration or affiliation.
SIC's revelations have left many questioning the National Directorate of the PSP's oversight, as it claims to be unaware of any link between the agent and politics and asserts that nothing is recorded in the individual file. However, Bruno Gonçalves was honored with a silver medal for exemplary behavior by the PSP, according to a 2022 list of such awards.
It's essential to note that the PSP's Internal Administration Inspectorate also has competencies to address this matter, in addition to the disciplinary process opened by the Municipal Police. However, closer scrutiny of these organizations' collaboration with both political parties and extremist groups might be necessary to ensure public safety and trust.
