The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a one-day blitz targeting distracted driving on Highway 401 in eastern Ontario on Wednesday. The operation, which took place between Quinte West and Kingston, was focused on enforcing regulations against handheld device usage while driving.

Officers involved in the operation checked drivers along the stretch of highway for any signs of distracted driving. The blitz resulted in 30 charges for using a cellphone while driving, with a total of 30 drivers being penalised for their actions.

The OPP advises drivers to keep their focus on the road and to use a mounted phone if they need to use their device while driving. For first-time offenders, the fine for a distracted driving offence is $615, and a three-day licence suspension is also imposed. Additionally, a first distracted driving offence also results in three demerit points.

The OPP recommends keeping hands on the wheel and avoiding any distractions while driving. The organization emphasises the importance of safe driving and the dangers of distracted driving.
